Kaunis Iron is implementing an operational adjustment to strengthen its competitiveness and lay the groundwork for sustainable, long-term mining operations in Tornedalen.At the same time, the company continues to work actively on its long-term strategic direction.

The Geological Survey of Sweden has decided to expand the national interest area for the mineral deposits Pellivuoma and Sahavaara-Tapuli in Pajala Municipality. The decision is based on new criteria that highlight the importance of material supply for society, both nationally and within the EU.

Pipeline, electric trucks, and a new railway line. Right now, several different logistics solutions are being discussed for transporting our iron ore from Kaunisvaara out to the global market. We check in with Nils-Johan Haraldsson, Head of Logistics, and Astrid Sundberg, Logistics and Marketing Coordinator, who offer insight into today’s logistics solution as well as an update on where we currently stand in the strategic work on alternatives and future logistics solutions.

Kaunis Iron is currently evaluating several avenues to strengthen the long-term stability and future potential of its operations. “By assessing the alternatives step by step, we are enhancing Kaunis Iron’s ability to conduct long-term and sustainable mining operations in Tornedalen,” says Hans Djurberg, Head of Sustainability at Kaunis Iron.

Sweden’s largest wetland restoration is just one part of the proactive environmental efforts undertaken by Kaunis Iron. In the forests surrounding the open-pit mine, wetlands and forest lands are being restored to suit species such as orchids, the three-toed woodpecker, and the Eurasian curlew.

We operate in an international market currently characterized by lower iron ore prices, higher freight costs, and a weakened US dollar compared with recent years. This impacts our profitability, while management is simultaneously working to create the best possible conditions for sustainable, long-term mining operations in Tornedalen.

Kaunis Holding AB today publishes its interim report for the second quarter of 2025. The quarter was marked by a persistently challenging global market environment, with continued pressure on iron ore prices, rising freight costs, and a weakened US dollar negatively impacting the business. Despite this, the company has continued to deliver according to plan, maintaining strong operational efficiency and sound cost control.

Following the ruling from the Land and Environment Court of Appeal, several appeals have been submitted by different parties. We are now awaiting a decision from the Supreme Court on whether leave to appeal will be granted. Our long-term goal remains unchanged – to conduct sustainable mining operations in the Tornedalen region.

Ahead of the upcoming court decision regarding Kaunis Iron’s environmental permit for current and future operations, the company is clarifying its direction. Regardless of the outcome, the goal remains to secure a permit that enables long-term mining operations in Tornedalen. With a solid foundation, long-term strategy, and significant mineral resources, the company aims to continue contributing to local development and meeting Europe’s growing demand for domestically produced iron ore.

Despite a challenging market environment, the cost-saving measures initiated last year have had a clear impact.
