The main hearing this week in the Land and Environment Court of Appeal regarding Kaunis Iron's case for continued and expanded mining operations has concluded, with a ruling expected in 2025. – I hope that we will now reach a final decision, allowing us to take important steps toward long-term operations in Tornedalen, says Åsa Allan, Deputy CEO of Kaunis Iron.

As one of the final pieces of the Kaunisvaara-Svappavaara Ore Transport Project (MaKS), construction of the new bridge over the Torne River in Autio is underway. The new bridge will facilitate transport between Kaunisvaara and the transshipment terminal in Pitkäjärvi and allow for two-way traffic.

The collaboration project “Safe and Sustainable Transport in Reindeer Herding Areas,” which we conducted together with Sattajärvi Sami Village, among others, concluded with positive results at the beginning of 2024. We are now moving forward with a follow-up project, “Safe, Sustainable Transport in Reindeer Herding Areas 2.0,” to continue developing the working methods and all the beneficial aspects that emerged in the previous project.

Kaunis Iron, in partnership with Stegra and the Port of Narvik, has entered into a memorandum of understanding to investigate the possibilities of establishing a modern pellet plant in Narvik. The project, which is currently in the early evaluation phase, aims to create a long-term, sustainable production of iron ore pellets, with operations planned to start in 2030.

Kaunis Iron is now ISO certified in two areas: quality and environment. This means that external auditors have examined our processes and seen that we meet the set requirements. The requirements are about having clear routines and good documentation, and about following the work methods we have decided.

On the 1st of December, the Land and Environment Court granted Kaunis Iron a new expanded environmental permit.The judgment enables Kaunis Iron to start two new open pits, Sahavaara and Palotieva.– This assures mining operations for the future and means that we can build in the long term, also for future generations, with prospecting for further new deposits, says Klas Dagertun, CEO of Kaunis
