Kaunis Iron undoubtedly has a significant impact on the local community in Pajala, both as a major employer in the area and for those living near the mine. Our vision is to develop the world’s most sustainable iron ore, so it is natural for us to maintain an open dialogue with residents of Kaunisvaara and to do what we can to minimize the impact of our operations on the local environment. Here’s why we are pumping out water
If the water is flowing from the faucet in the picture, it means we are currently pumping water into the Muonio River. When we extract ore from our open pit, we go below the groundwater level. This means we need to pump out water to access the ore.

Measurement and reports
We regularly monitor the impact of our operations on the surrounding environment. This includes measuring vibrations, air shock waves, surface and groundwater quality, flow rates, water levels, effects on vegetation, fishing, air quality/dust, and noise. In addition to these routine checks, we also conduct in-depth surveys to enhance our understanding of our operations and their environmental impact. For example, we have conducted sampling of peatland water and detailed measurements of the Muonio River. Our measurements are summarized annually in an environmental report and quarterly in our quarterly reports.
