Kaunis Holding AB today publishes its report for the fourth quarter of 2025. The quarter was characterized by a stable market situation, cost control and improved cash flow, despite continued uncertainty in the global economy and the currency market. The environmental permit for existing and expanded mining operations has gained legal force, creating long-term conditions and forming the foundation for sustainable mining operations in Tornedalen.

The Board of Directors and management of Kaunis Iron share a common view of the company’s future. The company has a strong ambition to create the conditions for a long-term competitive mining industry in Tornedalen, with a focus on stability and sustainable development over time.

The Supreme Court has decided not to grant leave to appeal in Kaunis Iron’s environmental permit case. As a result, the decision of the Land and Environment Court of Appeal stands, and Kaunis Iron’s permit for continued and expanded mining operations is now final.

Kaunis Iron meets the requirements for wetland restoration under the company’s environmental permit. A decision from the County Administrative Board this autumn confirms that the work carried out meets the conditions for our operations.

Kaunis Iron, together with subcontractors, has completed the expansion of the tailings pond in Kaunisvaara—an important measure to meet the requirements of the company’s environmental permit and to ensure future deposition capacity.

Kaunis Iron’s new environmental permit, which would enable long-term mining operations in Tornedalen, has not yet gained legal force. Since the main hearing at the Land and Environmental Court of Appeal in 2024 and the positive ruling in May 2025, the matter of leave to appeal is now being handled by the Supreme Court, following appeals from several concerned parties.

Sampling takes place in all kinds of weather, every week, with the same strict requirements for cleanliness and quality. Mikael Rantakyrö, field technician, is one of those who at times wades through snow or treks across wet marshes. “We meet a lot of people when we're out in the forests and fields, and they’re often very positive that we’re out sampling,” he says.

When Megan Robson and Ola Kostet left the big city life in Canada for a ancestral home in Erkheikki, the MaKS project hadn't started yet near their home. The phase was completed in the fall of 2025 and today they can safely walk with a stroller on the new pedestrian and bicycle path through the village. “When we came home from the maternity ward, the sidewalk was already in place – it was perfect timing,” says Megan Robson.
