Expansion of the Tailings Pond Completed

Kaunis Iron, together with subcontractors, has completed the expansion of the tailings pond in Kaunisvaara—an important measure to meet the requirements of the company’s environmental permit and to ensure future deposition capacity.

Project DP3, which includes the renovation and expansion of the existing tailings pond, began in May 2024 and was completed on schedule in November 2025. The expansion has been carried out to enable continued deposition of concentration tailings from additional deposits and to ensure that operations are conducted in a long-term and responsible manner.
“The outer embankment around the tailings pond is now finished. Constructing the outer embankment was one of the conditions in the new permit and, according to the permit, had to be completed within two years of the permit being put into use. In addition to the embankment, we have also built ditches to direct water to the clarification pond,” says Linus Styrman, CFO at Kaunis Iron.

Around 10 people from Kaunis Iron have participated in the project group, and an additional 20–30 people from the contractor Arctic Infra have worked on the construction. The work has involved a significant extension of the perimeter of the tailings pond by approximately two kilometres.
“It is a well-executed project that keeps to the schedule and meets the requirements of our permit, while we work to minimise the impact on nature,” says Linus Styrman.
