Strategic Work for a Long-Term Sustainable Mining Operation

Kaunis Iron is engaged in a comprehensive strategic effort aimed at securing a long-term and sustainable mining operation in Tornedalen. A key issue is whether the mine should continue operating as it does today or whether it should take a new direction, involving different products and alternative ways of reaching the market. To answer that question, the work has been divided into different tracks that together will provide a complete picture.
This work includes, among other things, extended operations at Tapuli, project plans for Sahavaara and Palotieva, decisions on which products to deliver, and future logistics. Together, these components provide a picture of possible paths forward and help us make well-informed decisions for a long-term mining operation — provided that we receive the necessary environmental permits.
As part of evaluating alternative logistics solutions, several possibilities are being considered. Hans Djurberg, Head of Sustainability at Kaunis Iron, explains more:
– Here we’re looking at options such as heavier and electrified trucks, rail solutions, and the possibility of building a pipeline between Kaunisvaara and Pitkäjärvi. A pipeline is an example of a solution that could contribute to more efficient transport and reduce heavy traffic on the roads. At the same time, it’s an extensive project that would require both permits and significant investment, which is why it’s part of the strategic process — not a decision in itself.
The goal of the entire strategic initiative is to have a clear picture of the future direction around the turn of the year.
– By assessing the alternatives step by step, we are strengthening Kaunis Iron’s ability to run a long-term and sustainable mining operation in Tornedalen, says Hans Djurberg.
