    Invitation to consultation: Tapuli

Kaunis Iron AB intends to apply for a permit amendment under the Swedish Environmental Code regarding the Tapuli waste rock storage facility at Kaunisvaara, Pajala municipality.

The planned amendment concerns part of the current environmental permit and involves increasing the maximum amount of waste rock permitted to be deposited at the Tapuli waste rock storage facility from 96 million tonnes to a maximum of 114 million tonnes.

The purpose of the amendment is to enable continued extraction and deposition of waste rock at the Tapuli waste rock storage facility from ongoing mining of the existing Tapuli open pit and the planned mining of the additional Palotieva open pit.

The consultation covers the planned changes to waste rock deposition within the operation, as well as the environmental impact and effects that the change may be assumed to entail, and the content and structure of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).

The implementation of the consultation and the views expressed during it will be documented in a consultation report, which will be included as part of the permit amendment application. Comments submitted during the consultation will be taken into account in the continued investigative work and in the preparation of the EIA, which will also form part of the application.

A description of the planned amendment is available in the consultation material, which can be accessed here:
